Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about ShiftPic - the free online image converter that works directly in your browser without uploading files.

ShiftPic is a free online image converter that runs entirely in your browser. Drop in a photo or graphic and the web app instantly converts it between formats like JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, ICO and SVG—without installing software, creating an account or uploading anything to a server. The entire conversion happens locally on your device, so your pictures stay private and the process is lightning‑fast.

ShiftPic supports the most popular image formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, ICO and SVG, plus AVIF in browsers that support it. You can convert PNG to WebP for faster page loads, SVG to PNG for social graphics, and many more combinations—one file at a time or in bulk.

Yes. ShiftPic is a 100% free image converter—no subscriptions, paywalls, credit systems or hidden watermarks. Convert as many files as you like, as often as you need.

No. All conversion runs using modern browser APIs (Canvas API and Web Workers), so your photos never leave your device. There are no uploads to any server, which means zero risk of third‑party access and no waiting for large files to transfer.

Each individual image can be up to 10 MB. That covers most smartphone photos and web graphics while keeping performance smooth on all devices.

Absolutely. ShiftPic includes batch conversion: drag‑and‑drop multiple files, choose your target format and quality once, and download everything in a single ZIP. It's perfect for optimising dozens of images or converting screenshots in bulk.

It depends on the output format. Lossy formats (JPEG, WebP, AVIF) apply compression that can reduce quality, but you have full control over the compression slider—so you decide the balance between smaller file size and visual clarity. Lossless formats (PNG, BMP) preserve the original quality.

Yes. ShiftPic provides a quality slider that lets you fine-tune compression for formats like JPEG, WebP and AVIF. You can also scale images down (75%, 50%, 25%) to further reduce file size—great for optimising images for the web.

Once the page has fully loaded, ShiftPic can convert images without an active connection since all processing happens in your browser. Open it on a train, in a classroom or anywhere with spotty Wi‑Fi and it still works until you refresh or close the tab.

No. Because everything happens in your browser, ShiftPic imposes no daily, weekly or monthly cap—convert one file or a thousand, as long as each stays under 10 MB.

Never. Every download is a clean file with no branding, watermarks or embedded ads.

Yes. ShiftPic preserves the original file name during conversion and only changes the extension to match the new format. No prefixes, suffixes or random IDs are added.

Yes, but with limitations. AVIF offers excellent compression (up to 50% smaller than JPEG), but it depends on your browser's encoding capabilities. Modern versions of Chrome, Firefox and Opera support AVIF output, while Safari and older browsers may not. ShiftPic automatically detects whether your browser can encode AVIF and only shows it as an option if supported.

ShiftPic currently does not support HEIC or TIFF as input or output formats. These formats require native codecs that are not available in most browsers. HEIC (used by Apple devices) and TIFF (used in professional photography and print) need server-side processing to convert, which may be added in a future update. For now, we recommend converting HEIC or TIFF files with a desktop app first, then using ShiftPic for further format changes.

ShiftPic is fully responsive and touch‑friendly. Whether you open it in Chrome on Android or Safari on iOS, you get the same drag‑and‑drop interface, batch conversion tools and local processing.
